The current conflict has left many women as the sole providers for their children and families – either because they have been widowed or because their husbands and sons are away from home for the war. Many women have taken on the role of first responders and humanitarian workers, yet they are also active participants in the conflict, supporting fighters or manning checkpoints. Without women there can be no sustainable peace in Yemen. It is crucial for women to be included in all peace talks and peacebuilding efforts.
Saferworld supports its Yemeni partners to increase women’s participation in local peacebuilding. We address gaps in knowledge about women’s activism; strengthen existing women’s initiatives; and we promote the essential role of women in conflict prevention and resolution locally, nationally and internationally.
