Strengthening civil society

Civil society organisations in Yemen play a crucial role in responding to the impact of war and mobilising communities to work together. Saferworld supports Yemeni civil society organisations to focus on the issues they have identified as priorities and to help them build the foundations for longer-term peace in Yemen.

We advise on operational procedures and provide financial support to civil society projects. Our Civil Society Solidarity Fund provides small grants of up to €45,000 to Yemeni organisations to undertake work that includes: increasing youth and women’s participation in community activities and policy changes, building relations between communities and people who are internally displaced due to the conflict and tackling violence in secondary schools.

The effective functioning of local councils is essential for delivering governance services and locally-led development initiatives that help build the foundations for longer-term peace in Yemen. Our partner Resonate! Yemen provides technical support to local councils and builds their capacities to engage with the wider community for participatory and inclusive action.
