Climate and environmental action
Climate change in South Sudan is affecting access to food and livelihoods, exacerbating existing food insecurity and worsening conflicts and competition over resources like water and grazing lands. Environmental degradation has increased flooding and resulted in changed seasonal cattle migration patterns. This in turn fuels conflicts between pastoralists and farmers and has led greater numbers of people to move to urban areas which will continue to put pressure on limited resources.
Saferworld works with communities to identify climate-related risks and potential solutions, analysing the impact of climate-focused interventions on conflict dynamics. We identify the organisations responsible for local management of access to natural resources and support them to identify conflict flashpoints and potential triggers, build trust between communities and forge links them with other peacebuilding, security and justice providers (formal and informal).
We explore opportunities to advocate to sub-national, national and international policymakers and practitioners about the interconnections between climate change and conflict, and for conflict-sensitive and equitable management of natural resources locally and nationally.
