In Kyrgyzstan, police play a crucial role in preventing crime and addressing community safety concerns. Saferworld and the Foundation for Tolerance International support 53 Local Crime Prevention Centres (LCPCs) across six provinces in Kyrgyzstan. This video showcases the efforts of several LCPC leaders, who share their experiences, challenges and successes in addressing crime and fostering peace within their communities.

We're working with Yemeni partners to advocate for and establish a Cyber Extortion Division within the Public Prosecution Office of Yemen’s judicial system, which came into effect in March 2024. In Somalia, Saferworld and partners have established an Early Warning, Early Response (EWER) system to reduce conflict and violence. We recently trained 200 EWER champions to monitor and respond to conflict and connect victims to vital services.

After three decades of independence following the fall of the Soviet Union, Central Asian countries continue to face challenges to their stability and governance. Last year saw large-scale domestic unrest in three of the region’s five countries. Many of these events follow similar patterns: growing tensions and grievances among citizens lead to protests, which are met with a harsh and disproportionate response including the use of lethal force by security forces, feeding into further mistrust between authorities and the population.
