With Saferworld’s support, civil society organisations in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan are beginning a new wave of locally led peacebuilding initiatives – helping people work together to address shared challenges, strengthen trust and prevent conflict.

After three decades of independence following the fall of the Soviet Union, Central Asian countries continue to face challenges to their stability and governance. Last year saw large-scale domestic unrest in three of the region’s five countries. Many of these events follow similar patterns: growing tensions and grievances among citizens lead to protests, which are met with a harsh and disproportionate response including the use of lethal force by security forces, feeding into further mistrust between authorities and the population.

Uzbekistan’s long and fraught history of corruption and abuse of power since independence has led to widespread public mistrust of the police. Saferworld has worked with civil society partner Istiqlol Avlodi to pilot a community policing and community security approach as part of the country’s ongoing efforts to reform the police.
