Following the Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) recent capture of El Fashir in North Darfur – a city under merciless siege for the last 18 months – the humanitarian situation has deteriorated sharply, marked by mass killings, forced displacement, and the collapse of the few remaining essential services. Urgent international action is needed to protect those trapped and fleeing amid worsening violence, hunger, and disease.

The facilities support the aid sector to be more conflict sensitive in fragile and conflict-affected humanitarian contexts by strengthening contributions to peace and reducing the risks of causing harm.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the adoption of United Nations (UN) Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security. The resolution, passed in 2015, was the first time a dedicated UN Security Council resolution recognised the unique role of young people in sustaining international peace and security. In the subsequent decade, there have been many laudable steps forward, but greater investment is needed to fulfil the ambition of this landmark agenda.

Sudan is entering a new phase of the war that started two years ago, on 15 April 2023. While recent military developments – in particular, the recapture of Khartoum by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) – may appear to be a turning point, the war is far from over. Indeed, to frame it as such would be an outrage to the many who are still at grave risk as the conflict intensifies across other parts of Sudan, especially the west and south, which have endured decades of atrocities and injustice.

Across Sudan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Myanmar and beyond, women are leading life-saving interventions, advocating for peace, and holding together communities fractured by war and displacement. Yet, while their work is more critical than ever, the harsh reality is that many are being forced to operate with dwindling resources.
