Jordan: Local Capacities for Peace

Meeting summary

As part of our 'Capacities for Peace' project, Saferworld and Conciliation Resources held a three day conflict analysis workshop in Amman, Jordan in June 2014.

The workshop provided a space for local community representatives and local municipalities to identify sources of and responses to tensions resulting from the influx of Syrian refugees in Jordan. Community organisations and municipality representatives joined from six governorates in Jordan: Amman, Mafraq, Ma’an, Karak, Irbid and Zarqa.

Sessions were run on different conflict analysis tools, with participants undertaking conflict analysis exercises as a group in order to better analyse strains and conflicts that are emerging across Jordan and to work together collaboratively to identify solutions. The final day brought together local actors, international NGOs, donors, and representatives from the government in a dialogue in order to build on the analysis undertaken during the training and begin to develop solutions to address the needs of both Syrian refugees and their Jordanian hosts.

This workshop summary presents an overview of the discussions that took place, as well some of the key recommendations and solutions that participants developed.

Saferworld and Conciliation Resources partnered with the Human Relief Foundation and the Identity Center in delivering this workshop.

The Capacities for Peace project is kindly funded by the EU Instrument for Stability.

“Given the strain Syrian refugees are having on Jordan’s economy and resources, more needs to be done to ensure that stakeholders at the local, national and international level regularly meet and share opinions on how to enhance the response, and promote greater accountability between donors, governments and local actors.”
