Arms Trade Treaty Approved

This article, written by Saferworld’s Small Arms and Transfer Controls Advisor, Elizabeth Kirkham, together with Allison Pytlak of Control Arms, first appeared in the Summer 2013 edition of Disarmament Times, a publication by the NGO Committee on Disarmament, Peace and Security. Here they examine the Arms Trade Treaty that was adopted by Member States in the UN General Assembly on 2 April 2013 following an international campaign over nearly two decades. Key elements of the Treaty text are highlighted alongside expectations for the future establishment of an effective international regime and the need for governments and civil society to work together to ensure full implementation of the Treaty’s provisions.
