China and South Sudan

This briefing examines China’s relations with South Sudan in three different articles written by researchers from the Institute of African Studies, Zhejiang Normal University, the London School of Economics, the University of Western Cape and Saferworld.

While of varied opinion and perspective, all the articles contend that China is set to take a significant place in the future of South Sudan’s peace and development. Furthermore, it is suggested that South Sudan will present significant tests for China’s traditional means of economic co-operation and its stated commitment to Africa’s peace and security.

As such, the world’s youngest country may offer opportunities for Chinese state and commercial actors to better develop policy and practice in conflict-affected regions of the world.
