Referenda and beyond
On 9 January 2011 the referenda to determine the future of Southern Sudan and Abyei are scheduled to be held. These referenda will determine whether Southern Sudan will remain united with the North and if the oil rich territory of Abyei will become part of Southern Sudan or not.
The briefing looks at the implications of the referenda for peace and security in the region and emphasizes the need for long term support to a community-based approach to policing and civilian disarmament in Southern Sudan.
