Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy Inquiry: The National Security Strategy
Almost six months after the UK Government launched its National Security Strategy, our submission to Parliament’s scrutiny highlights concerns.
As we told the Joint Committee on National Security Strategy, our overall impression is that the UK national security strategy has been led by defence, which prioritises massive military expansion without either reconciling the risks of such an approach nor adequately supporting alternative tools for addressing security crises. The strategy frames conflicts and climate change as huge problems globally and for the UK, but is incoherent in offering solutions. Nor does the strategy analyse security crises with a gender lens. This ignores much of the UK’s existing expertise and capabilities in preventing and resolving conflicts and potentially risks driving war and instability.
