Women building peace in Sudan
6.9 million women and girls in Sudan are at risk of gender-based violence. As the war wages on, women and girls are paying the highest price with a spike in violence against them. Despite these risks, they continue to lead frontline responses. Their distinct experiences and courageous leadership demand urgent attention and concerted action from the international community.
During the 69th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) earlier this year, Saferworld hosted an event bringing together women peacebuilders and practitioners to spotlight the distinct impacts of the conflict on women and girls in Sudan and to amplify their demands for justice, accountability and inclusive peacebuilding. Their critical work is increasingly at risk amid the current global trend of significant reductions in aid spending.
This briefing captures the analysis and recommendations made at the event by the Sudanese women peacebuilders, who continue to lead frontline responses despite exclusion and risk.
