Conflict drivers and priorities for peace among communities in Central Equatoria State, South Sudan
Central Equatoria State, the home of Juba, South Sudan’s capital, has witnessed much of the violence that has engulfed the country over the past ten years. Many parts of the state remain inaccessible due to insecurity, and citizens face the ever-present challenges of sexual violence, torture, displacement and killings – often fuelled by guns. Alongside these threats, people living in the state are seeing civil space shrinking, with an increase in the arbitrary arrest and detention of activists and commentators.
In May 2024, Saferworld brought together a wide range of people, including participants from civil society, academia and faith-based groups, to delve into the main conflict drivers in Central Equatoria. This briefing outlines the main themes of these discussions and proposes solutions for fostering peace and stability in the state.
