Responding to gender-based violence: Challenges facing shelters and rehabilitation centres in Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan has seen progress in recent years in tackling the widespread problem of gender-based violence across the country. While political will from the country’s leadership is high, there are many obstacles that impede change: harmful gender norms remain firmly entrenched in many communities; and service providers do not have the resources needed to effectively address violence and support survivors.
This briefing outlines findings from a needs assessment conducted as part of a European Union-funded project implemented by Saferworld, Dialog and Istiqlol Avlodi, which aims to improve service delivery for survivors of gender-based violence in Jizzakh, Namangan and Samarkand regions. In the briefing, we make recommendations for how authorities can support shelters and centres to ensure women’s physical and psychological well-being.
