Time to turn around: the decline of UK peacebuilding
Analysis from Saferworld and Mercy Corps reveals how the UK is no longer a global leader in investing in conflict prevention and peacebuilding.
Even as global peacefulness declined for ten of the past 14 years, UK spending on civilian peacebuilding, conflict prevention and resolution plummeted by US$300 million between 2016–2021. By 2021 only 2% of UK overseas development assistance (ODA) was spent on peacebuilding despite numerous government commitments and a clear global need.
In this briefing we learn more about the implications of this decline and provide recommendations on how to reverse the trends.
