Tajikistan: Peacebuilding through a gender lens

In Tajikistan, deep patriarchal values are limiting women's and girls' education and economic opportunities, placing them at greater risk of gender-based violence. The law gives survivors of gender-based or domestic violence the right to access shelters, social services and legal aid. In reality, they face serious barriers: poor implementation, lack of information and awareness, fear of retaliation and stigmatisation, and a scarcity of services, particularly in rural areas.

This briefing presents the findings from analysis in Isfara, Vanj and Rasht districts. It provides recommendations for authorities, international donors and civil society to improve policies and practices using a gender lens and conflict-sensitive approaches. These tools are especially useful in addressing the barriers mentioned above and in developing interventions and services geared towards improving the safety and security of women and girls in communities across Tajikistan.
