PeaceNexus Foundation and Saferworld: advancing gender-transformative peacebuilding
26 February 2025In 2024, PeaceNexus Foundation selected Saferworld as an organisational development partner, awarding us a strategic grant and investing in our goal of shifting from gender-sensitive and responsive practices to a comprehensive, gender-transformative approach across our programmes, governance and internal operations.
Saferworld launched a Gender Equality Strategy in 2023, as part of our aim to advance peace rooted in gender equality, an ambition outlined in our ten-year strategy. With PeaceNexus Foundation’s support, we are strengthening our organisational capacity and deepening our ability to fulfil our commitment to gender transformation in fragile and conflict-affected settings. By embedding these practices in all areas, we are setting new standards for gender responsiveness that inspire and support our partners, who are directly affected by and respond to conflict in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
This funding is just one part of a long-standing collaboration with Saferworld. We have been an active member of the PeaceNexus Foundation’s peer learning group on gender since its inception in 2018. The group brings together peacebuilding organisations to share progress and challenges in a supportive environment which encourages collective problem-solving. In 2021, the group published a landmark report based on its collective insights, which was presented at Geneva Peace Week to encourage broader adoption of effective gender strategies in peacebuilding.
‘This partnership exemplifies the power of thoughtful, strategic donor support. We are not just making incremental changes – we are redefining what gender equality means in peacebuilding and setting a new benchmark for the entire sector.’ Laureen Karayi, Senior Gender Adviser, Saferworld
‘Saferworld has long provided leadership on this topic and was part of the initiative from the beginning, so we were delighted to support their continued commitment to developing a context-sensitive intersectional approach. We are impressed by their first results and look forward to learning more from and with Saferworld.’ Carole Frampton-de Tscharner, Organisational Development Lead, PeaceNexus Foundation
