The misuse of state-owned small arms and light weapons (SALW) in Kenya has significantly contributed to people's insecurity. In pastoral contexts such as Isiolo and West Pokot Counties, SALW are widely used in cattle rustling and other criminal activities such as highway robberies.

Saferworld's project, supported by Finland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focuses on improving the accountability of the state regarding their ownership of firearms through proper record keeping, and building trust and confidence between police and communities.
