Syria

The fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, following 13 years of both conflict and social movements, marked a historic turning point for Syria. After 54 years of authoritarian rule and systemic brutality, Syrians now have a historical opportunity to shape a future founded on justice, pluralism, equality and inclusive participation.

We believe that peace becomes sustainable only when it is rooted in justice; when the grievances that fuelled conflict are acknowledged and addressed; and when all members of society – especially those who historically have been marginalised – are fully included in shaping the path to justice. Our work seeks to build holistic approaches to accountability and justice to repair broken social relationships and enable communities to imagine and build alternative futures.

Our work

Sustainable peace in Syria cannot be achieved without addressing the inequalities and exclusions that enabled authoritarianism to take root and continue for so long. It is directly linked to interdependent social, economic and political transformation. As this new chapter unfolds – within a context of deep uncertainty and persistent tension – civil society will have a critical role in shaping Syria’s future path; yet, civil society also faces deep challenges in moving forward from years of repression and division.

Saferworld facilitates collaboration between civil society actors to support combined approaches to address Syria’s challenges – supporting them to build visions for peace which are greater than what one organisation can hold alone. We work with Syrian civil society to realise their shared visions through reflection and dialogue spaces, supporting networking and fundraising, and amplifying their vision to policymakers.
