Middle East and North Africa
Despite legacies of colonialism and authoritarian regimes, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has exceptionally strong and vibrant civic movements. At home and in exile, grassroots activists and civil society organisations are leading the struggle for peace and justice. Yet, they face immense challenges.
Saferworld works in solidarity with civil society and communities in the region. Our approach places a central focus on partnership and locally led peacebuilding. We aim to shift decision-making power and resources to communities affected by conflict. In partnership with civil society organisations, we support communities to build peace; help civic movements to survive and thrive under oppressive conditions; enable cross-border solidarity and learning; champion women’s rights and their leadership in building peace; and challenge international policies that contribute to conflict and violence in the MENA region – especially arms transfers.
We also provide expert advice, training and accompaniment on conflict analysis and conflict sensitivity, as well as long-term strategic and organisational development support to civil society.
